This Tythe Barn is a Grade II listed stone barn and had already been converted into a dwelling and been lived in since the late 1980s. The original barn dates back to the 18th Century and was formerly part of Old Ashstead Farm. The barn was built using the ‘tailings’ from the local bargate stone quarry. Originally, it was used as an agricultural barn housing grain, straw and cattle. Our brief was to completely redesign the internal spaces to provide a new family home. The 1980s conversion was very dated and was not conducive to modern family living. The original kitchen was small and located in a semi basement area cut off from the rest internal spaces. There was no central family living area and the internal spaces had little connection with the garden. The existing internal walls, floors and staircases were demolished and the internal spaces completely re-designed to provide a new modern contemporary family home.
