Bonners Barn

Project type

Barn Conversion

Location

Surrey, UK

Photos

Bernard Zieja

The barn was converted for ancillary domestic use to the adjacent farmhouse to west of the barn which is a Building of Local Merit. There was an existing first floor structure which was clearly a later addition as it was constructed with softwood posts and joists. A new mezzanine floor was constructed with the existing void retained and a new helical staircase to a new open mezzanine. A new back staircase was required for access to an office and bedroom respectively. The elevations remained largely unchanged; with existing openings utilised. However on the west elevation a new glazed gable was constructed to bring light into the main central space of the barn. The design approach defines the barn’s previous use and respects and express clearly the historic fabric of the building.
