Originally built in 1622 as ten terraced Almshouses with a central private chapel. The Grade I listed Almshouses sit centrally on the plot and are surrounded by the thirty two bungalows which were built subsequently in the early 1960s. The Almshouses were in a poor state of repair and in need extensive remedial works. A review of the site as a whole was undertaken to ascertain the best approach for the necessary enabling development to generate funds which were used to pay for the repair works to the Grade I listed building. The enabling development needed to be sensitive to the historical significance of the Almshouses. After numerous options were considered to extend to the rear of the building concerns were raised as any extensions would interrupt the views along the rear elevation chimney stacks as these were considered an important aspect of the Grade I listed building. Following discussions with Historic England and Waverley Borough Council the agreed enabling development involved the construction of six new single storey one bedroom dwellings. These would be located within the envelope of the Almshouses and their immediate garden area resulted in less harmful interventions to the listed building itself. It was important that any new development should be a similar scale and not dominate the context of the Almshouses. The new dwellings were of brickwork construction in Flemish bond, clay tiles and traditional lead roof as these materials complimented the materials of the existing Almshouses.
