Wonersh Mill
Project type
Conversion of a Grade II listed Water Mill
Location
Wonersh, Surrey
The water mill had long since been out of use. The existing building is of timber construction, the older parts in oak with some newer soft wood additions. The condition of the timber structure was in some areas very good but the roof had leaked in other areas and there was deterioration of the timbers. The mill race at one time ran through the middle of the building but the water had been cut off and the mill pond had dried up. Essential restoration works were required and as the original use of the building as a mill was redundant and an alternative use needed to be found. The conversion of the building into a residential dwelling was the best option as the site was rural and vehicular access was problematic. This change of use made the undertaking of restoring this Grade II listed building an economically viable proposition. The internal layout required very careful consideration to ensure that the accommodation worked around the existing oak frames. It was also important to retain the original mill working equipment and old mill stones which were put on display.
