The Italian Job

Project type

Refurbishment

Location

Piedmont, Italy

The property is located in the Alta Langa region in Piedmont and overlooks the French alps to the west. The house had been abandoned for sixty years and was in a very poor state of repair requiring structural works, roof repairs, damp-proofing, drainage and new services. As well as all the repair and restoration works required the internal spaces needed to be completely redesigned. The lower ground floor was not connected to the house as it had been used as part of the vineyard and was only accessible to the agricultural land at the rear. There is a small chapel building attached to the main house but this was only accessible through its own front door facing the road. A single toilet located on one of the rear balconies and a shower head under the main staircase were the only washing facilities. A new curved staircase was designed to connect the lower ground floor to the main house and the main staircase was removed and redesigned to allow for a new shower room at first floor level and a bathroom on the ground floor. The lower ground floor which previously had agricultural use was converting into a new kitchen, TV snug and a bedroom with en-suite.
Every building should tell its story - The house has been restored to retain its character and the ruined appearance to both the internal and external wall finishes. Externally the water damaged render was removed exposing the brick and stonework behind which was then left visible and re-pointed. Internally many of the walls still had the original colored decorative plaster which had been badly water damaged. In these rooms the loose plaster was removed and replaced with a natural lime plaster making the repairs easily identifiable. This ensures that as much of the original building fabric can be retained and the history of the building clear to read.
