The site is in Wonersh, Surrey and there was an existing dwelling on it, built in 1953. Planning approval was granted for a replacement dwelling which is far more energy efficient. Renewable energy and energy saving systems were incorporated into the new building. These included a ground source heat pump to provide the energy for underfloor heating and hot water supported by a micro combined heat and power (CHP) unit which exports excess electricity to the National Grid. A rainwater harvesting system was also installed to reduce mains water usage. The external materials used were facing bricks to the ground floor, natural oak framing at first floor level, with brick infill and plain clay roof tiles. Internally there is a large central hall with a sweeping oak staircase and a gallery with exposed oak trusses.
Building works commenced in 2007 and were completed a year later.
This large site was originally the location for a Leonard Cheshire care home that was built in the 1950s. After an extensive marketing campaign during the course of 2006 – 2008, the whole site became vacant in 2008 as no alternative operator could be found. In 2008 planning permission was granted for the demolition of the main and some of the other buildings and their replacement with four detached dwelling houses.
We were involved in the design and construction of only one of the new houses. The new design provided a large family dwelling which is constructed in brick with stone quoins and a clay tile roof. There is a large open central hallway with a self supporting stone staircase accessing a curved gallery at first floor level.
Flint & Brick House - Surrey
The project involved the conversion of an existing barn to be linked to a newly built brick and flint house. The first phase involved the complete refurbishment of an existing barn building including a new first floor bedroom which is accessed by a contemporary helical staircase.
After the barn works were completed, the original house was demolished and building works then commenced on the new dwelling, which was completed in 2011.
